The Beatitudes

Jesus teaches the Beatitudes on the mountain. He names the greatest commandment. He tells the parable of the lost son.

Section 2
MAT 5:2

And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying:

Section 3
MAT 5:5

“Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.

Section 4
MAT 5:9

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.

Section 5
MAT 5:11-12

“Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Section 6
MAT 5:39

But I say to you, Do not resist the one who is evil. But if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also.

Section 7
MAT 5:42

The Pharisees question Jesus

Give to the one who begs from you, and do not refuse the one who would borrow from you.

Section 8
MAT 22:15

Then the Pharisees went and plotted how to entangle him in his words.

Section 9Section 9
MAT 22:16

And they sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians, saying, “Teacher, we know that you are true and teach the way of God truthfully, and you do not care about anyone’s opinion, for you are not swayed by appearances.

Section 10
MAT 22:17

Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?”

Section 11
MAT 22:19

Show me the coin for the tax.” And they brought him a denarius.

Section 12
MAT 22:20

And Jesus said to them,“Whose likeness and inscription is this?”

Section 13
MAT 22:21

They said, “Caesar’s.” Then he said to them,“Therefore render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”

Section 14
MAT 22:22

When they heard it, they marveled. And they left him and went away.

Section 15
MAT 22:23-24

The same day Sadducees came to him, who say that there is no resurrection, and they asked him a question, saying, “Teacher, Moses said, ‘If a man dies having no children, his brother must marry the widow and raise up children for his brother.’

Section 16
MAT 22:29-31

But Jesus answered them,“You are wrong, because you know neither the Scriptures nor the power of God. For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven. And as for the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was said to you by God:

Section 17
MAT 22:32

The lost son

‘I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? He is not God of the dead, but of the living.”

Section 18
LUK 15:2

And the Pharisees and the scribes grumbled, saying, “This man receives sinners and eats with them.”

Section 19
LUK 15:12

And the younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me the share of property that is coming to me.’And he divided his property between them.

Section 20
LUK 15:13

Not many days later, the younger son gathered all he had and took a journey into a far country, and there he squandered his property in reckless living.

Section 21
LUK 15:15

So he went and hired himself out to one of the citizens of that country, who sent him into his fields to feed pigs.

Section 22
LUK 15:17-19

“But when he came to himself, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have more than enough bread, but I perish here with hunger! I will arise and go to my father, and I will say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Treat me as one of your hired servants.”’

Section 23
LUK 15:20

And he arose and came to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him.

Section 24
LUK 15:21

And the son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’

Section 25
LUK 15:22-24

But the father said to his servants, ‘Bring quickly the best robe, and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet. And bring the fattened calf and kill it, and let us eat and celebrate. For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found.’And they began to celebrate.

Section 26
LUK 15:26

And he called one of the servants and asked what these things meant.

Section 27
LUK 15:28

But he was angry and refused to go in. His father came out and entreated him,

Section 28
LUK 15:29-30

but he answered his father, ‘Look, these many years I have served you, and I never disobeyed your command, yet you never gave me a young goat, that I might celebrate with my friends. But when this son of yours came, who has devoured your property with prostitutes, you killed the fattened calf for him!’

Section 29
LUK 15:31-32

And he said to him, ‘Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours. It was fitting to celebrate and be glad, for this your brother was dead, and is alive; he was lost, and is found.’”
